Chicago at the Bat: Both Sides Now

by Hilary Barta

With apologies to Ernest Lawrence Thayer

On the North side and the South side, the sun is shining bright;
“Go, Cubs, Go” and “Na na na na” are heard both day and night;
Both Yuppies and construction guys are given cause to shout;
Yes, there’s joy in two Chicagos — winning baseball’s the new “clout”.

  1. I’ve previously written of having attended my first game in Wrigley Field, a Cardinals-Cubs affair back in Sept., 1975, with my ninety-year-old Great Uncle Art, a lifelong resident of the Central Lakeview District since long before it became “Wrigleyville” Here is another quickie:

    “Both Leagues, Now”
    Another for Great Uncle Art
    2/25/1885-2/25/1976
    The Village Elliott: 5/7/16

    “We looked at Chi World Series now,
    From long ago but still somehow,
    It’s “Hitless Wonders”, he’ll recall,
    Art wasn’t into Cubs that Fall.
