500 (Thome, Rodriguez and Thomas)

by James Finn Garner

500
Is such an exquisite digit–
The miles in a Daytona race,
Fortune‘s biggest firms anyplace,
And Fiat’s postwar car-midget.

500
The dingers hit by “Big Hurt” Frank,
Of the sweet stroke and bitter knees,
A-Rod, whipping boy for the Yankees,
And Thome, svelte as a Sherman tank.

500
Their several teams never captured it all.
The sluggers pushed on in good years and bad,
Taking what pleasure there was to be had
In campaigns of .500 ball.

500!
Carved into history like Cy Nostradamus.
As Father Time erodes, hobbles and tames,
That mark will always shine next to these names.
500 cheers for Thome, Rodriguez and Thomas!

The Flight of Goose Gossage

by Sandy Marshall

Goose Gossage,
Goose Gossage,
You are your own Bossage,
You have your own mitt that you sign and Embossage.

Goose Gossage,
Goose Gossage,
You always will Flossage,
Your round rolling stone will ne’er gather no Mossage.

Goose Gossage,
Goose Gossage,
You boot up with DOSsage,
You always predict the results of coin Tossage.

Goose Gossage,
Goose Gossage,
Your car drives with Nossage,
And you play like you dance, like the winged Bob Fossage.

King Felix

Felix is not a cat nor catcher.

He is a very large pitcher.

Batters do not like to face his deliveries.

He will grow very much richer.

Ode to the KingDome

by Todd Pheifer

When I was a boy,
I would go to the Dome,
The Dome that the people called King

To watch my M’s play
And undoubtedly lose,
But in the 7th, at least we could sing.

Eventually the roof
With its rain-soaked tiles
Began to fall to the ground
In little lawsuit-friendly piles,

So the men with the dynamite
Were called to the site
And the Dome was extinguished
With a BOOM in the night.

3 Haiku

by Jeff Fleming

I wish the Cubs had
Ichiro Starting in Right
Instead of Jacques Jones.

The Wooden Elbow
Continues to be creaky–
For godsakes, just pitch!
