Baseball Is . . .

by Stephen Jones

A contradiction—

of lazy clouds which
like counted sheep
unroll slowly overhead,
and did-you-see-that plays,
routinely made, which
flicker like lightning
beneath the skin.

Baseball was—and is—
born slow,
with metaphors for a head,
but when least expected,
it will rage—a storm.

$200 Dollars Gets You …

by Stephen Jones

An ivy leaf from Wrigley Field

It must be like a fine wine,
vintage 2016

And that doesn’t include S&H,
which is $15 per leaf And
there’s a limit: 10 leaves/customer

Why so few–
is there a shortage?
Or is it concern–
that too many leaves
makes a bouquet?

Nonetheless, it is a leaf

and not some dirt,
like the Yankees sold one time
That’s right–it was dirt,
just plain dirt

At least the leaf grew–and
flourished–just like the team.

Idle Thought

by Stephen Jones

When the smoke finally clears,
sometime later this year…

The American League East
will be a black ‘n blue beast:

No team a clear winner…
but one a survivor.

Alley fights and turf wars–
they’re waged just that way.

Air Raid! Air Raid!

by Stephen Jones

The Bronx Bombers leveled Baltimore
With their home stand of “Rolling Thunder”.
Their high-flying offense dropped runs, 38;
They carpet-bombed Birds, who managed just 8.

And if these metrics alone
Weren’t enough of a feat,
Bombardier Judge launched one . . .
496 feet.
