No team this season
Is, for some reason,
Over .600 after 30 games
What is the motivation–
And much consternation–
For this MLB stat?
Is it filthy pitching,
Or awful hitting,
Or a combination of both?
No team this season
Is, for some reason,
Over .600 after 30 games
What is the motivation–
And much consternation–
For this MLB stat?
Is it filthy pitching,
Or awful hitting,
Or a combination of both?
The totals so far say
Five wins, ten losses
In the first fifteen games …
And the worst beginning
In twenty-five years.
The play-by-play person
Searches for a lining
For the pinstripe cloud,
And keeps on saying
It’s a long, long season…
MLB, in its wisdom,
Is turning to PCs —
To further clarify
What we already know:
In order to appeal
To a younger audience,
All games
Will now be defined
By strikeouts, home runs
And walks only,
And therefore
Will be played
As quickly as possible.
Teams will be penalized
For any and all
Between-the-lines,
Around-the-bases stuff.
The Rays came to play,
Leading the Dodgers
1-0 through five.
Snell was magic, was unhittable,
And then (incredibly), Cash
Pulled him off the mound.
Whaaaat?
In their dugout, the Dodgers
Must’ve thanked the gods
(Because, up till then,
They’d no answer for his stuff).
They promptly scored two runs
In the sixth, and never looked back.
What a World Series so far.
Last night’s
Rays’ comeback victory
Has left my mind ajar,
My mouth open …
And waiting for more.
Forget the singularity
Of the bubble and pandemic –
This World Series is “homer”
(And so much more) epic.
