Big Dead Machine

by Don Starwalt

I love to see my Cards team win
But the Reds are so bad, it’s a sin
That stadium’s bare
No fans in the chairs
Looks like they’re losing again.

Whatever the Weather

by Don Starwalt

There’s another Cubs game today
If Chicago weather don’t get in the way.
The Cubs and the Cards
Always go at it hard
Whenever they gather to play.

They Lost Again

by Mark Donham

Lovullo came out of the dugout
The call he didn’t like
Pointed at Molina
Said the motherf***er stole the third strike

Molina overheard him
Did not appreciate the phrase
Charged him like a bull
Seeing red in rage

The benches emptied
It almost was a brawl
But the umpires ejected Lovullo
For arguing strikes and balls

The game settled down into normal
Could the fired-up Cards win?
They scored the first run, things looked good,
But alack and alas, lost again.

It’s early in the season
A long long way to go
Almost as much excitement
As the clowns in a rodeo.

Say It Is So, Joe

by Hilary Barta

“Buck’s been canned” are the words which we pray.
You’d be banned if we fans had our way.
We can’t stand you, now please stay away.
Here’s a grand, there’s a highway, go play.

Oh Doctor! Yanks in Six

by the Village Elliott

Since “Dem Bums Clubbed Bear Babies,” who knows:
If Bronx Baby Bombers bash ‘Stros,
Are Dodgers Yanks’ “cousin”
Ninth time out of dozen?
Jah must know ‘cuz he asked Billy Loes.*

* Before dem Bums met the Bronx Bombers in the 1952 World Series, Brooklyn’s resident northpaw wit Billy Loes, when asked his prediction for the series, was quoted, “Yanks in Six.” Headlined the next day, Loes claimed he was misquoted. “I said, ‘Yanks in seven.'”

The Yankees and Dodgers have met in 11 previous times, the most any two teams have met in the Fall Classic (Second, Yanks-Giants (5-2); third, Yanks-Cards (2-3). The Yankees have won eight (1941, ’47, ’49, ’52, ’53, ’56, ’77, ’78). The Dodgers won in 1955 (Brooklyn’s only crown), ’63 and ’81.
