Allegation’s Disillusion

by the Village Elliott

Sat in Wrigley with Great Uncle Art,
Local White Sox fan from the team’s start.
Asked ’bout his Sox team Black,
He looked 50 years back,
I could feel dark angst still breaks his heart.

Allegations my childhood team raided
By hacking; legacy degraded.
Feel like fan of Black Sox,
Or Bill Belichick’s jocks.
Perhaps I’m just too f*cking jaded.

I don’t think it mere disillusion
Created by Cardinals’ collusion.
In game’s hacking scandal
The league might mishandle,
But fact of FBI’s inclusion.

“Few More Deservin'” Hall of Famer

by the Village Elliott

When Musial died, I really couldn’t name your
Oldest surviving Baseball Hall of Famer;
Learned at 97, Red Sox Bobby Doerr
Is oldest, while three others 90 or more:
There’s Albert “Red” Schoendienst who is 92,
Now Yogi, who last month just turned 90, too.
Still, third one is older; his powerful swing
Helped Giants of Gotham earn World Series ring.
Respect of the Franchise is still evident;
Invited by new champs to meet president.
Like year-older Red Sox, a star before War,
In the Negro, not Major Leagues (white like Doerr),
The player Branch Rickey first wanted to sign.
Branch wouldn’t compensate team, so Jackie broke line.
In two years he breaks Giants’ pale color scheme.
In two more, breaks Brooklyn hearts, bums Jackie’s team,
Big part of the Miracle of Coogan’s Bluff.
Mentored team’s prodigy: He taught me Right Stuff.
I was Negro League vet, but Majors raw rook,
He helped me to adjust, showed me what it took;
Was like my big brother, still is to this day,
A true Hall of Famer, says Mister “Say Hey.”
First Big League black exec, broke that color line.
Soon enters through “front door” of Cooperstown shrine,
Mid-80s, retires, stays active in game;
Jints retire number, still honor his name;
For long life in baseball, few more deservin’
Than young 96-year-old Monte Irvin.
(Adds Willie: First glove in the Big Leagues I score,
A MacGregor endorsed by Red Sox Bobby Doerr.)

“Stop Your Cubbing”

by Alan P. Rudy

(or A Ballad of Faux-Bravado)
With Apologies to Ray Davies, and to Chrissy Hinde

It is time for you to stop all of your Cubbing
Yes, it’s time for you to stop all of your Cubbing, oh oh oh
There’s one thing you gotta do
To make wins still come true
Gotta stop Cubbing now
Yeah, yeah, stop it, stop it

It is time for Carpenter, instead of Castro,
Yes, it’s time for Molina, and not Castillo, oh oh oh
There’s one thing you gotta do
To make wins still come true
Gotta stop Cubbing now
Yeah, yeah, stop it, stop it

Each tear that falls because of Jackson,
Ross, Lake, or Strop
And leftovers like Phil Coke…
It’s ‘cuz your Cubbing!

It is time for Lynn and Wacha, instead of Lester
Yes, it’s time for even Kozma, not Herrera, oh oh oh
There’s one thing you gotta do
To make wins still come true
Gotta stop Cubbing now
Yeah, yeah, stop it, stop it

There’s one thing you gotta do,
Trade us Bryant, and Soler, too
And there’s one thing you gotta know
We’re nervous, don’t you know
Gotta love the Cards
Yeah, yeah, start it, start it

Yadi

by Alan P. Rudy

With apologies to Joyce, but not Billy, Kilmer

I think that I shall never see,
A poem lovely as Yadi.

Yadi whose potent arm at rest,
Ceases the runner’s speedy best;

Yadi who chooses signs all day,
Leaving the hitter’s bats astray;

Yadi whose knees through wear and tear,
May platoon at first in late career;

Upon whose neck ink is lain;
And forearm rose he has attained.

Doggerel’s made by fools like me,
But Yadi amazes all who see.

National League Central 2015 Spring Training Haiku

By Stuart Shea

Cubs
A Sure Thing is not
called “A Sure Thing” unless it
hasn’t happened yet

Reds
Jason Marquis back?
Surely this is a sign that
the world is ending.

Brewers
For one final spring,
Aramis Ramirez tries
to avoid diving

Pirates
Could Clint Hurdle
be the Bucs’ final hurdle
to winning a title?

Cardinals
Some with a fresh start
Will soar higher than they could
Down in the southland
