The greatest pitching
In history is wasted.
Home is Citi Field.
The greatest pitching
In history is wasted.
Home is Citi Field.
Colón’s a fan favorite
At age 43
Returned to New York
Crowd screaming “Big Sexy!”
A Braves pitcher now
Bartolo took the mound
Struck out six
Only one run allowed
Big Sexy’s reign continues
We must watch in awe
His solo home run
Still the best we ever saw
For My Great-Uncle Art
Pleased Cubs fans celebrate victory,
Happy for part of my family:
Mom, who’s from near North Side
Tempered Dad’s Redbird pride,
My St. Louis baseball legacy.
Never had Chitown antipathy
All pervasive in Dad’s family.
Cubs were Mom’s first team,
Cuddly in the extreme,
Part of my gonfalon legacy.
I’ve learned, suggest no Cub fan forgets:
“Fickle Destiny Oft Fails Fans, Vets.”
Fate slammed ’68’s door
On my Cards’ destined score
And “eighty-sixed” the’86 Mets.
Facing Mets, Jints southpaw with stubble
Again evoked Gotham’s Carl Hubbell.
Conor G’s three-run fly
Sent the Giants to Chi,
There to prick Cub’s gonfalon bubble.
Do we Cubs fans want Giants or Mets?
Of drubbings by Mets we are vets
When a pitcher eyes batter
Which is which will not matter
If there’s trouble we’ll break out in sweats.
