Opening Day

by Doug Fahrendorff

April
Has finally returned
Days longer
The sun warmer
The ennui of winter
Gives way
To the excitement of spring
Best of all
Baseball is back
Harbinger of the halcyon days of summer
One more season
Following the national pastime
Today at Miller Park
The journey begins
Play ball!

The First Game, Far and Away

by Hilary Barta

Spring Training is over, hey, hey
And the Cubs play their first game away
That fact isn’t strange
But can’t they arrange
To start without interleague play?

Hilary Barta provides limericks and giggles everyday at his site, LimerWrecks.

Lo, the Winter is Past

Each year, before the first spring training game, the late Tigers broadcaster Ernie Harwell would read from the Song of Solomon (2:11-12).
