All-Star Clerihews #2: Clerihew Requiem

Rafael Devers
Will never say never
But he’s pretty sure
He wouldn’t go on a gastronomic foraging tour.

Paul Skenes
Mentors awkward teens.
Growing up in California
He too had acne and body dysphoria.

Elly de la Cruz
Has over 400 pairs of shoes
And 75 square meters
Of Odor Eaters.

Alec Bohm.
Wherever he lays his hat is his home.
But wherever he is across the nation,
He digs The Temptations.

All-Star Clerihews #1: Clerihew Resurrection

Tarik Skubal
Is always hungry for noodles.
Chow mein, soba, udon, ramen–
He just tells the waiter, “Keep it comin’!”

Garrett Crochet
Thinks those edible bouquets
Are a colossal waste.
“How much cantaloupe can one person taste?”

Seth Lugo
Reads a lot of Victor Hugo
Daydreaming of an understudy job
With “Les Misérables.”

Shōta Imanaga
Loves the generosity of Chicaga.
He never has to scrounge
To pay for a beer at the Nisei Lounge.

Thank You, Vito Barone

by Jim Siergey

I have to thank
Vito Barone
for introducing me to
Willie Mays.
Vito lived across the alley
and was appalled to learn
that at the age of nine
I knew nothing
about baseball.
That summer
he came over every day
and we would go across the street
to the empty lot
where he would teach me
to catch, field. throw
and hit a baseball.
Every day.
Where I grew up
you were either
a Cubs fan
or a Sox fan.
Vito was an anomaly
as he was a Giants fan.
Whenever the Cubs played the Giants
he’d invite me over
and we’d watch the games
on TV.
There I got to see Willie Mays
in his prime.
Also
McCovey, Marichal and Cepeda
but Willie was special.
He was magical.
So, thank you, Vito,
wherever you are.

“Love is Like a Baseball Game”

And then, 40 years later, these pioneers of Philly soul were captured on video at a census block party in the City of Brotherly Love.  What better examples of two gems of the American heritage that we must lovingly pass on to the next generation.

Have a happy and old-school Fourth of July, Bardballers! Stay safe!
