America’s Favorite Pastime

by Monica DeRee

Blue skies and green grass
A partner in crime to watch time pass
Sacks of peanuts and beers in hand
Everyone yelling “Out!” as loud as they can
Boxes filled with play after play
A ballpark dog eaten only one way
Lights brighten the night as the sun dies down
Last cheer erupts as the winning pitch leaves the mound

One Fan’s Wild Card Dreams

by Stephen Jones

Hey, don’t count them out —
The Yankees just clout
Toronto’s first-place Blue Jays.
It’s the first time this season
They swept the opposition,
And next up, it’s the Devil Rays.
Yeah, there’s not much time left —
And it’s a hard nut to crack —
But reality’s something you check
Outside the stadium gate.

The White Sox, Natch

by James Finn Garner

Jose Abreu has the slash
Anderson displays some flash
Frazier’s got Hudepohls in a cache
But Saladino has the ‘stache.

Chris Sale aint no Versatch’
Quintana needs a hit of hash
Shields is (I hope) abashed
But Saladino has the ‘stache.

Ventura’s seat’s turning to ash
Reinsdorf sure won’t spend the cash
Harrelson’s completely bats–
But Saladino has the ‘stache.

I pray he doesn’t wax it soon.

Ichiro

by Doug Fahrendorff

Only the first name necessary
Japan’s hitting master
3000 hits at age 42
As talented in the field
As at bat
His success
Paved the way
For other Japanese position players
Fans wonder
What he’d have done
Had he reached the Major leagues
Earlier
Few would argue
Ichiro is a truly singular talent
And should be a cinch Hall of Famer
